Houjicha - Roasted green tea

Houjicha is a type of green tea that is unique in both its flavour profile and preparation method. Unlike traditional Sencha tea, which is steamed, Houjicha is roasted over high heat. This process gives the tea a distinct toasty and nutty flavour that is loved by many tea drinkers around the world.

In taste Houjicha is similar to coffee, with one essential difference.

One of the main differences between Houjicha and Coffee is the level of caffeine in the tea. Houjicha leaves are roasted, the heat in the process destroys much of the caffeine, making it a great option for those who are sensitive to caffeine or who  enjoy  drinking tea in the evening. 

Compared to Sencha, Houjicha has a lower astringency level which results in a smoother and more rounded flavour .

Let's take a look at the process of preparing Houjicha:

1. Start by boiling water. The water temperature for Houjicha should be between 90°C to 100°C.
2. Use about 3-4 grams of Houjicha tea leaves per cup of water.
3. Pour hot water over the tea leaves and let steep for 45 seconds to 1 minute.
4. Strain the tea: Use a strainer to remove the leaves from the water.
5. Enjoy Houjicha.
